What is Dutrion?

Our Water & Our Future

It is often assumed that we have an endless supply of clean and fresh water in the world. Given the increasing number of people and their daily consumption of water, along with the demand for agricultural and industrial water usage, we can no longer take water for granted. It is imperative that many countries start considering how to deal with this situation in the very near future before they run short or even out of water.

The use of disinfectants in drinking water has been instrumental in eliminating waterborne diseases. In North America, most water treatment plants use chlorine to disinfect drinking water and maintain a residual in the distribution system to prevent bacterial regrowth. While chlorine has undoubtedly saved lives, recent studies suggest that it also has negative effects. Many people dislike the taste of chlorine, and as a result, they choose to buy bottled water instead of drinking tap water. Unfortunately, this creates a harmful situation for the environment. Therefore, it’s important to find alternative disinfection methods that can effectively eliminate waterborne diseases without having any adverse effects on the environment or human health.

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a chlorinated disinfectant that can be used as an alternative to chlorine at the treatment plant (as a primary disinfectant). Disinfection is essential to safeguard drinking water; the health risks from disinfectants and disinfection by-products are much less than the risks from consuming water that has not been disinfected. Chlorine dioxide in general as a rule of thumb is often dosed ten times lower than chlorine, this does not affect the taste of the water in a negative way.

What is the Dutrion Tablet

Dutrion Tablet® formulation is an optimized mixture of several ingredients to generate a unique liquid chlorine dioxide in water that can be used in many specific applications. Dutrion tablet is an effervescent well packed tablet. When added to a specific volume of water, it reacts quickly and safely to form a long-lasting chlorine dioxide solution. The concentrate is then simply dosed into the main water distribution system to disinfect the target water. The product when mixed with water (Stock solution) has a shelf life of approximately 30 days when stored in a dry, dark, cool location. Once the Dutrion® stock solution is dosed into your water lines, Dutrion® remains effective with a good residual, depending on the incoming raw water and the degree of contamination that has been built up in the water system. The product is easy to use, store and transport. ClO₂ can form some by-products like chlorite and chlorate, which must be monitored, but with appropriate dosing rates it has no harmful effects on humans, livestock, crops, equipment, or the environment.

What is Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2)?

Chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) has been used extensively as a drinking water disinfectant around the world. Chlorine dioxide can be used in many applications like household water, emergency water treatment, food production, municipal water, wastewater, industrial water treatment, agricultural water for animals and crops, and much more. ClO₂ is highly effective as both a disinfectant and an oxidant. Chlorine dioxide is a broad-spectrum micro-biocide effective with a wide pH-range (4 – 10). Chlorine dioxide is a known disinfectant for bacteria and viruses.

Using chlorine dioxide instead of chlorine can assist in reducing the formation of harmful disinfection by-products, for example trihalomethanes and halogenated acetic acids. The unique ClO₂ chemistry does not chlorinate. It is a relatively small, highly energetic molecule, and a free radical even in diluted aqua solutions. At high concentrations, it reacts quickly with reducing agents, but is stable as a diluted solution in a sealed container that is stored in a dark and cool room. ClO₂ has a higher capacity to de-activate pathogens with lower dosing rates compared to most other disinfectants.
